I plan to learn more about slow trolling harnesses this year.
With colorado's in sizes 4 or 5, is there a preference for single or double blades ??
Are there a different conditions/applications that dictate single or double ??
thanx, GR

I've run the smaller colorados (3 & 4) in both a single and a double. I think the small double blades pull more fish than the small single blades though it may depend on the day and the speed. The 5s can go either way. I like the bigger blades 6, 7 and 8 only in a single. And they work great at slow speeds. As for willows I normally run a double and faster speeds like 2 to 2 1/2mph. I got some of the bigger 2 1/4" long willow blades from R&R and am going to try them as a single. Though this is probably like asking which is best Chevy or Ford. Everyone will have their own opinion. |

Gary, Check the OGF website. Jim Stedke and Gary Zart are giving info as to when, where, and how with the blades. |

Shoulda known they'd ask those same Q's on the OGF Will follow that thread. Sticks'n'spoons'n'willows have done me well, but the other blades will be new to me this year. Plus this'll be the first year I'll be set-up to slowwww troll. |

| The harness routine is alot of fun if you're making them yourself. It's really fun to mix and match blades with beads to see what works. A lot of guys are using quick release clevises to make changes as the conditions change. I think Gary Zart is the master of the harness routine. He's going to be at the Mentor show this weekend. I've heard him 3 times already, and I always walk away with something new to try. |

Finally learned to snell and yes I use the plastic, quick change clevis with the little hook tip to reduce losing blades. So many sizes, colors, and combinations CAN get costly even makin em myself. At a presentation with Don from OlePetes, he was showing some of his harnesses with a wire leader. I'm also interested in learning about the advantages/disadvantages of the wire. I've been using #20 mono.

| I think they all catch fish. Only with the wire less chance of a nick in the line and a break off. I've used 20-25 floro and fireline. I'd rather use the floro since I think it's easier to tie. |

My preference for 80% of the year is single colorado's, gold and copper back deep cups are my favorite blades in size 5 and 6. I run alot of R&R Blades, JT Custom Tackle Blades and Silver Streak, go see craig at Erie outfitters he has all the blades you can image. I tie mine with 20 pound Seaguar floro carbon 5 ft long with quick change clevis's. I run double willows but only when I want to run at speed of over 1.7 and up, which is only in July and August the rest of the year I'm trolling with Colorado's at .8-1.6. I use #2 Octopus for the top hook and number 6 trebles on the bottom, snelling both hooks. Use premium hooks like Owner or Gamagatuzu, triple grips or EWG (extra wide gap) Diachi bleeding bait hooks are sharp and nice as well but I like the wider gap hooks better.
To be honost I have never ran a double colorado in my life, no need to, a bigger blade offers more flash and thump then the smaller 3's or 4's plus the smaller blades aren't usually deep cup so they push less water and thump and vibrate less. I'd rather have a bigger bait with more thump to it to get Erie eyes to bite, they aren't shy of big blade. I've caught them on number 7 and 8 colorado's and indiana blades many times. |

Thanx Kevin, I have some experience running double willows, 1.7mph + and mostly behind jets/bb's/dipsies. At the end of the year I began playing with in-line weights. I will be using in-lines, but are there any technique differences I should concentrate on when running #5 or 6 colorados at slow speeds 1.2 ? At slower speeds, are tattle flags more important ? Do ya get more trash hits at slower speeds ? Appreciate "your" opinions.

| Gary, I personally don't use tattle flags, never have and probably never will, I've learned to read boards very good, I can tell if a white bass is nibbleing on the worm or white perch, when this happens the board usually tips back a little, it won't slide out of place but they are hitting it, so you really have to keep your eyes glued to the boards to see the junk fish hit. Fishing with crawlers on Erie you just have to learn to deal with the junk fish, it's all part of the game, early in the year the junk fish really aren't to bad and only certain areas of the lake have alot of junk fish, if your in the school of walleye they junk fish aren't as bad, it's when your NOT on eyes and trying to find them is when you'll get his the hardest. Speed early in the year in April is usually .8-1.2. then May rolls around it's usually 1.2-1.4 then june and july 1.4-1.8 I like the 1.5-1.6 as my summer times speeds, but as always sometimes they want it slower or faster. |

| And remember GR....Its fishing. These speeds aren't set in stone. I've caught fish going .8 mph in July. And faster in the spring and fall. Experiment til you find what they like. I always start on the faster side as you will be able to cover more water at higher speeds. Sometimes the fish don't want faster so you slow down. I agree about those freakin' tattle flags as well with KGone. I have used them before and actually think I lost a few fish because of them. If you study your boards enough you shouldn't need em but they do help with the light biters. They would be good for a beginner with boards. |
Dedication will make you better at anything you wish to accomplish. |

| Kevin come on I know your good but you can read a white bass or perch in 2-4s without a tattle ill put money that you cant. I say 50% if your lucky. Gary I highly recommend that if your going to troll harnesses to get tattle flags. these arent for days when its flat calm and a golden retriever can read a board these are for days for two reason one when crap fish are hitting and your in 3 footers. And two when a big walleye comes up and latches on and swim with the boat. There are many days that if you didnt have a tattle flag the board might go back slightly and you pick up the rod and reel and nothin there. The tattle flag when read properly can help you read what the walleye is doing so you can drop back or feed the fish for 15 seconds or so so the walleye can eat it then you start reeling in. I know its a 15 dollar or so upgrade but man its worth coming from a guy who fishes 700 hours a year on the water and fishes harnesses 99% of the time. It will really help you take alot of guess work out of board reading IMO Good luck Gary Zart Blue Dolphin |

| Not in 2-4's you silly goose!!! But if it's pretty calm (2's or less trolling directly with them) I can, I can see the board tip back indicating a white perch/bass hitting the worm. Remember I don't always run my boards to canada like you do, easier to see bites like this when they are closer to the boat. |

| OK thats cool i was going to say your the best it you were going to do that. I always say tattles for beginners just because it really takes some time with harnesses to read boards. That was my point. Good luck at the islands didnt know you were going ill be doing the seminar talks more fishing talk this is driving me crazy not be able to fish. Have fun Gary |

| OK< K-gone. Maybe you don't run your boards to Canada. Just Half way. LOL I've fished with you. Prior to that I always ran my boards close to the boat at night. Normally 1 at 30ft and 1 at 50ft. I have tattle flags on my 2 Port side boards as these are the ones I take with me when I fish on someone else's boat. Guess I have to get 2 more now that I have a boat again. |
