Well with all the time I have on my hands due to being on medical I decided to get a jump on making my spinner rigs. I am not sure how many people make their own. It is something I enjoy. I read an article in an in-fisherman magazine and decided I could do this. Last year I caught at least one fish every trip on a lure I had tied. It just adds a little more fun to each trip. To get started I had to buy all the beads, blades, stirrups, ect....
In the past I have just used a peice of cardboard to store the lures. Worked ok until it got wet or tried to store them. So this year I decided to buy some plastic sheets that are used in cross stiching.
I cut the sheets down and used them to wrap the lures around. They worked great where ever the swivel ends up I just cut the pegand slide it into the eye.
And there you have it. The finished spinners on the craft sheet peices. I tie my own snells and add the color beads to match the blade. Oh yeah and the article from the magazine said to put a lite colored bead in front of the blade to act as an eye. Instead of paying $2 or more I just make my own. And I have the ablity to make them in any color pattern. Just thought someone might enjoy this. If you have a favorite color or just one that worked for you let me know so I can make a few for my box.

Try storing them on a pool "noodle"....styrafoam tube. Run a razor longwise down the tube and then you can insert your swivel into the slice. Then wrap your harness around it and attach the hooks securely into the foam. No mess or tangles and no one gets stuck either. I'll post some pics when I have a chance.

I tie my harnesses with just a loop at the connecting end. I put a horizontal row of sheet metal screws in the styrofoam with just the screw head showing, latch the loop of the harness on the screw head ,wrap and sink hook into styofoam. Tremendous satisfaction catching on a harness you designed !! Enjoy and Gary Zart will definitely impart a lot of wisdom and experience at the meeting.

| Ohyeah thank you for your input. It seems like we all have great ideas that work for each of us. It is great that we can share them and hopefully learn from each other and just have fun. |

Well i guess that i am the only fisherman that only use a worm harness three times last year... {i can only remember} one time last year that i had successes using it the harnesses. I did use most all of my stick baits with a small piece of crawler on the center hook. The eyes would hit the stick baits hard. JUST THINKING If i used the harnesses correctly i would catch the eyes faster Every day is different in the Cleveland area. there are not, to many structure to hold the eyes in one spot long. Here today moved tomorrow. It makes it fun Right see you all at the meeting Conan ..... Any interest in seeing the eye that i caught last summer...34inch 13 lb |

I've had limited success using worm harness's. I told my self last year that I'd give it a fair chance, which I didn't.
I do know and understand that spoons put fish in the box and harnesses wins tournaments. Good thing I don't fish them often |

| Conan, Posr your pictures. Would like to see that one. My biggest was 33 1/2". Lost my pictures and the fish when it thawed out during my move to Parma. Harnesses for the Cleveland area should probably have willow leaf blades, though the colorado will probably work in around the Gold Coast or in close at 72d St. |

| I Would love to see that hawg Conan. I am normally fishing with guys that like to cast and not troll. So I normally put a bottom bouncer out with a harness on it. I average at least one fish a trip like that but we have had a lot of days where that is the only way we could get the eyes to bite. I have had some luck trolling them. When casting I normally throw a gold super erie dearie but I also throw home made casting harness as well. |

I normally run at least 2 home made crawler harnesses when I am trolling off Lorain or Geneva. About 2/3 of the fish weI catch come off the "MEAT". I found last year the best blades were gold willow leafs pulled at 2.7 to 3.1 mph.
I hope to meet some of you guys at the reschedled meeting

BigKev I haven't caught any Steelhead in a couple of years. I run the harnesses off Diseys. Outside on the #3 setting about 240-260 back, and the inside on #1 setting about 150 to 170 back. I feel these are getting to 45' to 55' down. Do Steelhead get caught that deep in Lake Erie ?
Thanks Dave |
